Another international duo, Egyptians Aly & Fila, put their mark on the album with the third mix of the set. The Future Sound of Egypt Recordings label owners successfully add their brand and style of trance to the five-mix album. The duo is no stranger to live radio mixes either, hosting their own live weekly show titled ‘Future Sounds of Egypt’. It can be found on Soundcloud each week, or heard live every Monday at 1 p.m. PT.
Standing out most about this mix is its older trance feel. Many of the tracks lack lyrics and the recent growth of house-influence, which has made itself so prevalent in trance in recent years. Instead, the listener is treated to what feels like a pure reflection of early to mid-2000s trance. The average release year of the tracks on the mix is 2004, and there is an evident focus on this older style. The change-up in style fits perfectly within the theme of the rest of the album, and gives it a true feeling of a commemorative compilation album.
There are several highlights in the mix. The first is the intro, a remix by Aly & Fila of Rank 1’s Such is Life from 2001. It starts the mix on a high and sets the tone for the smooth journey that follows. The legendary Paul van Dyk checks into the mix as well, with his club mix of 1999 hit Another Way being included.
Just five of the sixteen tracks included in the set have Aly & Fila’s fingerprints on them, but none are more enjoyable than the one that started it all for the duo, Eye of Horus. The version included is a remix from Ronski Speed, which appears approximately half-way through the mix, and proves that it is just as great over a decade later.
The way it fits into the greater concept of the album, along with the overall quality, helps Aly & Fila steal the show on ASOT 650 – New Horizons.
