Armin Van Buuren: ASOT 650 “New Horizons” (Album Review)

Leading the Eastern European dance music push, along with Russian Arty and Hungarians Myon & Shane 54, Ukranian Omnia gets the fifth mix of the album. The 26-year-old has launched into the global trance scene over the last 18 months. Over that time he has played at shows all over the world, such as Ultra Argentina, Global Gathering UK and Ukraine, and A State of Trance 600 Holland.

Omnia has successfully created a unique sound that dances around trance and house, while throwing in a hint of electro (and sometimes even more than a hint). He does this all while slickly intertwining varying aspects of each, without losing the integrity of the track.

This sound is scattered throughout the mix. It features nine Omnia tracks, including the track that was the catalyst for Omnia’s recent rapid growth, The Fusion. The mix starts achingly slow, but quickly gains momentum that then builds throughout the rest of the set. Specifically, the flow and energy between the fourth and eighth tracks (all of which are Omnia originals) stands out from the rest of mix. Overall the mix is great, and there are more than a few moments of eye-closed daydreaming of enjoying it live. Northwest dance music fans may get a chance to turn that dream into a reality, sooner rather than later, if Omnia can continue his growth in 2014 and beyond.

The Armada label youngster entered the controversial DJMag Top 100 DJs in 2012 at #58 and jumped ten spots to #48 in 2013. Much like Arty’s place on the A State of Trance – 550 ‘Invasion’ mix compilation album, this milestone signals the beginning of what is likely to be a big year for Omnia. He’ll continue his strong start to the year by playing at two of A State of Trance’s ‘ASOT 650 – New Horizons World Tour’ locations, Almaty and Kuala Lumpur. To hear more of Omnia’s mixes check out his podcast, Omnia Music Podcast. The podcast is released monthly and can be found on his Soundcloud.
