[divider]People Have Pretty Much Always Kinda Sorta Liked Techno, But Not Really[/divider]
Richie Hawtin is something of a cult hero. Fans will pontificate about his immense technical prowess, while others have been known to go so far as call his minimal techno style “unlistenable.” It’s almost as if Richie Hawtin and other techno artists are the hipster fodder of our EDM world. And the numbers reflect that. Popular enough to make the chart every year for 12 years, but never what anyone might call in the “Top.”
It seems that techno is that genre we all think we should love, but have varying degrees of success actually loving. Richie Hawtin’s booking at Decibel Festival 2014 makes the argument that the fan base to support his style are here in the Northwest. But we also suspect that if you asked many EDM fans what their favorite techno track is, they wouldn’t have an answer. We’d go so far as to say they might not even know a bona fide techno artist. Sad reality or treatise on quality–that’s your choice to make as a listener. One thing we do know for sure is everyone and their mother was excited for testpilot, the Hawtin/deadmau5 collaboration.
