[divider]Despite “Deep” Music’s Skyrocketing Popularity, Artists Like Sasha & Carl Cox Are On The Decline[/divider]
We were a little shocked to see this. A recent 10 year chart of Beatport sales showed an almost laughable increase in Deep House’s popularity, and other genres like techno aren’t far behind. Every artist is going “one deeper” and embracing the chill, bottom-heavy grooves that provided the birthplace for what we now call EDM. It would seem reasonable then to think that the artists who pioneered those genres would be getting a U2-esque second wind right?
It’s not looking that way. Two of “deep” music’s heroes, Sasha & Carl Cox, have been slipping in DJ Mag popularity since 2007. Both artists are still phenomenally relevant and sought after for live shows. Last year Sasha put in a near-perfect extended performance at the launch of Departure nights at Foundation. Carl Cox has also found a new live edge with his Carl Cox & Friends stages, coming to Freaknight 2014 later this year. So what gives? Is it possible that people only love it deep when they’re at a show? Our best guess is that people love their deep stuff best in mix form, period.
And speaking of 2007…
