Germany’s Paul Kalkbrenner and France’s Vitalic remix of Paul’s track Altes Kamuffel (German for “old fool”) is a great way to mellow out on a drive home or before closing your eyes and bidding farewell to the day.
The intro of the remix hints at the early 90’s influence, as the first 45 seconds are reminiscent of an old school NES game. Each element feels slightly battered, as it vibrates and pulses like old transistors. The first seconds of the track feel almost dusty, but like the previously mentioned NES game a good jolt brings it into action.
Switching gears like a clock coming back to life, the track quickly evolves into a smooth, pleasant electro beat. The deep, round, trance-like complexities meld to a transformation that feels incredibly welcoming. It’s like an old friend you haven’t spent time with in ages but pick up right where you left off with as soon as you hug each other hello again.

Paul Kalkbrenner and Vitalic have both been honing their craft since the mid-90’s. Kalkbrenner initially dove into the world of techno playing records at youth clubs in Berlin around the age of thirteen. Vitalic released his first single to the underground music scene in 1996 and has since gone on to release several other albums. His third studio album, Rave Age, was released on November 5th, 2012. This experience keeps the diverse track from becoming confusing or indirect. Give the Altes Kamuffel remix a listen and let the melody carry you off to a deep, comfortable place.
