From remixes of Deorro and Galantis to samples of Big Sean and Fetty Wap, Fool’s Gold owner Alain Macklovitch (aka A-Trak) definitely brought his whole arsenal to the University of Washington Thursday night. SZA graced the students with her R&B vocals and held her own as the opening act of the ASUW Spring Show. The duo known as Rae Sremmurd was a crowd pleaser and performed all their hit tracks to an energetic crowd. However, A-Trak was no doubt the highlight for many a dance music fan out there.
He played an upbeat set featuring spiced-up originals like Push and trap flavors a la RL Grime. And lest anyone accuse Macklovitch of lazy DJ-ing, he even showed us his live scratching skills. A-Trak’s set was a combination of excellent mixing and song choices, a happy crowd (it is Greek Week here at the UW), and dynamic showmanship.
The HUB lawn wasn’t too shabby for a dance venue either. Students have dreamed of a UW Festival with a Red Square Stage, and maybe even a Drumheller Fountain Arena, but the Spring Show gave us a real life taste. After a whole Fall and Winter of indoor events, we know we are all longing to dance under an open sky. ASUW has our thanks for providing students with that opportunity even if only for a few hours on a Thursday night.
