Mental health has been finding itself at the forefront of conversation within the music industry since April, ever since the tragic passing of Avicii and more recently, Mac Miller. Since April, many prominent names (including Tritonal and Sasha) have been candid about their struggles with mental health. On World Suicide Prevention Day, Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo shared his plan to donate $30,000 to the non-profit organization To Write Love On Her Arms’s campaign called “Tomorrow Needs You.”
The organization’s mission is to “encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery“. In fact, the entire non-profit started because its founder Jamie Tworkowski wanted to help a friend. He sold t-shirts to help Renee Yohe enter a treatment program. Shortly after, he shared the story on MySpace under the TWLOHA name, and then received a flood of emails from other individuals seeking help. The rest, as they say, is history.
Back in April, Kygo shared an emotional tribute to late DJ and producer Avicii at the close of his Coachella set. He shared that Avicii inspired him to make electronic music. In fact, without Avicii’s inspiration, he would likely not be on stage performing. He closed out that performance with Avicii’s Without You.
