Irvine Welsh, the writer of the novel Trainspotting, which became adapted into a film in 1996, is co-writing a T.V. series with Dean Cavanagh about the birth of acid house in the UK. A genre which has it’s origins within Chicago, introduced by DJ Pierre.
Ibiza87 follows the 1988-1989 journey of the three legends who started the wave. Naturally, we’re speaking of Nicky Holloway, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling. Without their fateful flight to Ibiza, the acid house genre might never have made it’s way into the U.K.
Following their return from Ibiza, Rampling, Oakenfold, and Holloway opened the iconic clubs—Shoom, Future, and Trip, respectively. These clubs all brought about the historic ‘second summer of love,’ after the explosion of acid house in Europe. The 60’s psychedelic flair and smiley logo became a significant part of the culture.
In 1988, Oakenfold would find himself founding the U.K. based trance label Perfecto Records. Most recently, it announced that Paul Oakenfold would be the first DJ to perform a set at Stonehenge to an audience of 40 people.
In addition to their many contributions, the aforementioned artists have been sharing their stories with the writers and have been curating the series’ soundtrack. All of us at DMNW are waiting in anticipation for Ibiza87‘s official air date. After all, it’ll be exciting to see the goings-on of the ‘Second Summer of Love’.
