Kesha (born Kesha Rose Sebert) has long been protesting her contract and relationship with her producer, the infamous Dr. Luke (Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald). On October 14, 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit accusing Dr. Luke of drugging and raping her in 2005, shortly after she moved to Los Angeles. Luke got his start producing the incredibly popular song by Kelly Clarkson, ‘Since U Been Gone” (2004). Between 2004 and 2013 he cowrote or coproduced more than thirty top-10 singles, recorded by artists like Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus. Unlike ghost producers, Dr. Luke is primarily responsible for recording and composing his artists’ tracks.
To further complicate the situation, her good friend Lady Gaga (born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) was called upon by Luke to testify against her, claiming that omitted text messages misrepresented his character. He suing Kesha for defamation. Last month Lady Gaga’s spokesman said “[Gaga] has provided all the relevant information in her possession and is at most an ancillary witness in this process.”
He also said, “Dr. Luke’s team is attempting to manipulate the truth and draw press attention to their case by exaggerating [Gaga’s] role and falsely accusing her of dodging reasonable requests.” The convoluted case also calls to light the potential implication that Kesha was not the first artist groomed by Luke. Despite all the noise, Kesha is doing big things in the music world; we couldn’t be more proud of her determination and charisma.
Kesha’s new highly-anticipated album is called Rainbow. It’s her first in five years, her first without Dr. Luke. It was released on August 11, 2017, by Kemosabe and RCA Records. She wrote the title track on a toy keyboard while in rehab, a sophisticated departure from her radio-oriented party music. It’s clear from the heartfelt and passionate themes that Kesha has truly channeled her struggles into her new record.
Our thoughts are with Kesha during these difficult times. Plus, lets face it, historically the number of truthful accusations of assailants greatly outweighs false accusations to boost character.
