This last week Tyson Illingworth, more commonly known as tyDi, responded to a young woman’s doubts. The young woman opened up about her concerns and feelings about how felt to pursue a career as a DJ. She said it felt like she had to pick a different career because of her sex. Though she wanted to be a DJ, she thought becoming a tour manager was more realistic because she was a female.
tyDi could not believe what he was hearing, and after the conversation he turned to Facebook to share his thoughts. This in turn created a voice not only for her, but for all female DJs. There is no denying that there are more male DJs, but it was refreshing to see a well-known male DJ come forward and speak up for women and their talents.
There have been many articles, speeches, even TED talks on the topic, but to see a male DJ come forward and allow women from all over have a voice and tell their story on his Facebook is amazing and necessary. After the post was made public many women DJs came forward, telling their story and their struggle in a male dominated industry, while showing their appreciation for him and his words.
He opened up another conversation and provided an outlet for many women that needed their voice and music to be heard. Not only did he allow people an outlet but tried to provide them encouraging words, and even offered to hear some of their music.
So thank you, tiDy for speaking out and standing up. We are thankful to have someone using their platform for good and pushing people to go past what they think they can achieve.
