Many artists emerging in the electronic music scene struggle with copyright issues. Often times, songs on SoundCloud are removed (whether or not it is completely valid) due to such implications. Dim Mak Records is setting out to try to provide musical resources to flourishing artists.
Dim Mak Records is home to varying artists that span multiple genres. The label, originally created by Steve Aoki out of his dorm room, has grown immensely since its early days. Dim Mak now sports artists like The Chainsmokers, Dirtyphonix Deorro, Keys N Krates, Dillon Francis, and Borgore. Along with these artists, the record label also releases a bi-weekly podcast entitled New Noise.
Launched in 2010, New Noise began as a compilation series to highlight new, fresh talent handpicked by Steve Aoki and the crew at Dim Mak. By 2015, the episodes evolved into a bi-weekly, free-download model based on single songs. Artists were able to freely download singles for listening and inspirational use.
Last week, New Noise revamped to include copyright free models for its users. In using this model, it that allows the budding community of Twitch gamers and amateur YouTube content creators to use New Noise music in their videos and live streams without purchase or fees. What’s the catch you may ask? All Dim Mak asks in exchange for usage is to give credit and link back to the artist’s music.
To celebrate the launching of the incarnated New Noise, Dim Mak Records released their newest collaboration Crown by Wide Awake and UNKWN. Wide Awake’s hip-hop and DnB roots mix well with UNKWN’s trap beats. The song uses vibrant battle horns and the traditional trap wobble to give a punch for New Noise’s debut.
What do you think of Wide Awake and UNKWN’s new collaboration? What does this free copyright model possibly mean for the industry? Let us know what you think in the comments below! You can listen to the track and other New Noise songs here.
