If you’ve been to Aston Manor, you’ve already experienced the Sharps phenomenon. He’s a resident DJ there who, along with a battery of residents nicknamed the “Aston Mob,” bring the low-end heat night after night. What you might not know is that Sharps, aka Winson Sharps, is also Aston Manor’s music director. His Sharps N’ Friends events have been massively popular, and now that popularity has transformed into a full-fledged tour of the Pacific time zone—plus a stop in Chicago.
We were lucky enough to get a few minutes with Sharps as he begins his ‘Ready For War’ tour, and it sounds like it’s only the beginning for this rising trap performer.
1. How did the ‘Ready For War’ Tour come together? Who was involved?
The idea of the tour had been a goal for me since day one of starting the Sharps project. After a year and a half of residing as Aston Manor’s music director, cranking out tunes and trying to reach music lovers across the country, it is now time. I have been receiving event requests pretty regularly so with the help of my manager, Shawn Olyaie, we pieced together this 10 city, 12-week tour.
2. How is trap doing right now? What’s the “state of trap?”
Trap is at an all-time high right now and I couldn’t be happier. Trap is much different than it was just a few years ago though. It has been influenced by many other genres including hip-hop, dubstep, and big room. Leading the trap push are artists like RL Grime, DJ Snake, and others who have changed the game and have brought trap to the main stage of dance music.
3. Who are some of the Friends you’ll be playing with in Seattle?
Sharps N’ Friends has been a great experience already. My team and I have brought in some artists that are making some serious noise in dance music: Joel Fletcher, Graves, Saymyname, and Jaykode. This summer, starting June 12th, we have teamed up with Upper Left to bring a party unlike anything Seattle has seen before. We have DMX starting off the first event. He’ll be followed by Valentino Khan and we have many more left to be announced.
4. You’re going all over the country for your tour–what are you doing to keep fresh on the road?
I literally have one of the best jobs in the world. Traveling may be a pain at times but it’s always worth it when I get to play in front of all my friends and fans. From city to city, my fans are what keep me fresh and ready to go; along with enough Airborne to feed a small country.
5. Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans, old and new?
To my fans, thank you for sticking with me through the good and the bad. Without you all I wouldn’t be able to be living out a dream. Make sure to catch me when I’m in your city! Ready for War Tour is here! Side note, I have some big announcements coming soon that I cannot wait to share with you all.
