Back in 2011, Chris Emerson and Harley Streten joined forces to give us the Australian duo known as What So Not. Emerson and Straten, of course better know for their solo acts as Emoh Instead and Flume, worked together to give themselves an opportunity to break free of their usual sound. The side project gained momentum when the duo released the single Jaguar back in 2013, and rumors of a finished EP in 2014 began to circulate amongst the community as we eagerly awaited a release. Unfortunately with Flume’s solo career taking off, the release was put on hold and, earlier this year, Harley announced we would be departing the group.
Chris Emerson has been touring solo under the What So Not name since, and has been dropping bits and pieces of the EP all year. Most fans at this point have heard a good portion of the EP, especially the title track Gemini which has been heard all over the festival circuit this year. But the release date of the EP in it’s entirety has been somewhat of a mystery up until this week. Fans may finally rejoice and listen to the final piece of collaborative work between the two Australian producers. It feels somewhat as a closing to the book, and begins the new journey of the What So Not brand.
Gemini is a full 18 and a half minute, 5 track long reminder of why we all fell in love with What So Not from the beginning. And while we were sad to see Flume go, we’re thrilled to have seen Emoh continue to fly the What So Not flag. We can call only hope that this is just the start of newer things to come, and momentum from this release will push Emoh to further the WSN brand.
What So Not made its last appearance in the PNW just a few months ago back in September at the Neptune Theatre and then later in Vancouver at Fortune Sound Club. WSN will be returning to Vancouver on New Years Day to Celebrities. Give a listen to the new EP and let us know what you think by telling us on our Facebook or give us a tweet on Twitter,
