In the electronic dance music realm, finding a vocalist to serve your production with resounding justice is a tricky task. His success is sounding proof that Burns has made quite a name for himself in the electronic music scene. But what you may not have known is that Christian Burns has seen it all before – just in a different time and place. At a very young age, he took after his father, who was a British musician, and immersed himself in the music. His father taught him guitar, and by his early teen years, christian discovered his natural talent for singing. Soon after, he was playing in various high-school bands, exploring his craft. It would take a couple more years of serious dedication and searching for like-minded individuals before he would join what would become a world-wide phenomenon known as BBMak.
Taking off like wildfire, BBMak’s release of “Back Here” in 2000 topped at #1 in America and Japan’s radio charts, and their debut album sold over 3 million copies. And in no time at all, Burns and his two band members were set off on a world tour, performing in front of thousands and appearing on National Television shows. The stardom of BBMak had fully engulfed; but fires eventually die out, and after a miraculous run, the group decided to part ways and Christian was left to ponder his future.
After some time had passed, Christian found new inspiration from the Killer’s release, “Somebody Told Me.” The idea of electronic synths combined into rock music opened an entirely new realm of creativity inside him, and decided to get back to work and make music. Featuring his recent works on MySpace, under the name The Bleach Works, Christian experimented with the synth-rock combination and caught some major attention – including Tiesto’s. Tiesto was so impressed by what he heard that he offered a collaboration project, which would become their collective work, “In The Dark.” This track would lead-off Tiesto’s hugely-successful, Grammy-nominated Elements Of Life album, collecting over 5 million YouTube hits and sending Christian right back into the whirlwind of stardom; This time, on a world-wide tour with Tiesto himself.
As you could guess, Christian Burns went on to meet big-name artists and producers across the globe, including BT, which initiated a compilation of co-written tracks including “Suddenly,” “The Emergency,” and “Forget Me” off of BT’s Grammy-nominated album These Hopeful Machines. Burns also provided main and backing vocals on the album, proving to all that he is here to stay. Later came workings alongside Armin, Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Manufactured Superstars, and well, the rest is history.
It is not often we get to peek in on a vocalist’s journey into electronic music, often because in the electronic music world, the producer is the main focus. The story of Christian Burns proves that success can be life-long, it can be short-lived, or it can be both. And with the pace that he is going since his first dance release in 2007, we can easily say that Christian Burns is on the life-long path. We should treasure not only the producers who give life to the music, but to the writers who give life to the words – the vocal expression that can make all the difference in our experience with music. And seeing how much of his influence went onto some of the most prized collections of dance music in our time, Christian Burns is a voice and a writer to be celebrated.
