Venezuelan experimental electronic music producer Arca recently dropped the first track to be released from their upcoming sophomore full-length LP, which they revealed will be titled Mutant. The new single is titled Soichiro, and continues their typically loose-ended production style, with a lot of the glitchy, abrasive textures that were featured on their enjoyable full-length debut, Xen, released last year.
Arca has had a pretty incredible past handful of years, first debuting with their mind-bending Stretch EPs in 2012, then being brought as a guest producer for Kanye West’s latest album, Yeezus, and working pretty prominently with alternative R&B singer FKA twigs on her second EP, and excellent full-length debut, LP1. Most recently, Arca co-produced the latest LP from Bjork, Vulnicura. Following their early Stretch EPs and excellent 2013 mixtape, &&&&&, was their first album Xen, which saw the producer experimenting with not only wonky and instrumental hip-hop music, but also vast, detailed ambient soundscapes that have a very digital, inhuman quality to them.
Soichiro has a massive, epic presention, with gargantuan synthesizers, occasional flourishes of atonal glitches, and extremely odd groove with the percussion. It has a unique ambiance to it, much like on Xen, and is pretty much impossible to categorize in just a few words. While lacking in any sort of clear direction and musical structure, it is an engaging and challenging four-and-a-half minutes, and it has us excited to see what Arca will hit us with on their next LP.
