Politicians using songs without permission is nothing new, but rarely does it happen without public backlash. The latest in the storied (and bipartisan) line of music-stealers is Marco Rubio, the U.S. Senator from Florida who recently threw his hat into the 2016 presidential race. Walking off the stage after his campaign kickoff rally at Freedom Tower in Miami, Florida, Rubio had Axwell ^ Ingrosso’s Something New playing loud.
As it turns out, the former Swedish House Mafia members were not pleased.
Axwell ^ Ingrosso didn’t give their permission for this song to be used and don’t want to be affiliated with a particular party during the upcoming presidential race.
That statement, given to Business Insider, makes it pretty clear that the Swedish superstars aren’t interested in being affiliated with an American political campaign. Whether the campaign will stop using the track has yet to be seen, though history shows it can be a PR nightmare to go head-to-head with famous musicians.
