As a rule of thumb, if you’re an artist, there is no choice when buying a new computer; you simply go the Apple route. At their Spring Forward event, Apple announced a new member to the Mac family and it’s simply called the MacBook. The computer follows the trend for thinner and lighter devices, but it does come with some server compromises. Instead of the usual allotment of ports such as the MagSafe power connector, USB ports and possibly a Thunderbolt port, you instead only get one get USB port and a headphone jack. The new port also happens to be a new Type-C connector which means you will need an adapter for just about anything you want to use.
For a long time, software such as Ableton or FL Studio offered a superior experience on OS X, the operating system that Macs run on. This led to all types of artists buying Macs and investing in the platform with software such as Logic X Pro, Ableton or FL Studio.. With this new MacBook you have to chose between charging your computer or using a flash drive. If you would like to charge your laptop while using the port for something else, you could buy an adapter, but that still means that you will be left with one available USB port.
Apple still does carry their MacBook Pro line of computers and we feel that for any artist looking to invest in an Apple computer, they should skip the MacBook and for the MacBook Pro of any size. You will get faster hardware, more storage and a full allotment of ports that you will need while in the studio or on the road.
You can check out the new MacBook if you’d like at the Apple Store, along with the rest of their family of Macs. Let us know what you think below, on Facebook or Twitter!
