After a significant hiatus, Drum and Bass visionary Spor was all but set to return in glorious fashion. Following palpable hype generated from the Annie Mac premier of his single As I Need You on BBC Radio 1 and the release of a vicious Prodigy remix, producer Jon Gooch looked poised to ride the momentum into the album’s initial release date of March 9 as a bittorrent bundle. Yet in an apparent betrayal of trust, the album found itself leaked ahead of schedule, uploaded to Zippyshare, Hulkshare, and Mediafire, prompting quick reaction from the producer and his team.
Announcing the early release via reddit AMA, Gooch discussed the nature of the album and his choice to utilize bittorrent. The release, founded upon the nature of the biological spore itself, captures Gooch’s vision for the album to spread organically; self-sufficient in its replication, spreading through peer-to-peer file sharing. The bittorrent bundle comes in two forms: a free, 49 file package containing audio, video, and images and a secondary premium version with a “pay what you want” option. The album will also be released under Gooch’s own Sotto Voce label. In response to the leak, he spoke of the anticipation of something like this happening, thanking those fans who were willing to wait until the official release.
With a deep urban inflection and distinct rock and roll grit to it, Caligo will surely excite. And sitting on a cache of material for both Spor and Feed Me, Gooch is set to deliver more of what fans have come to expect from the producer. Stay tuned with us on future developments as we eagerly anticipate what is to come.
