Yet again, another big-named producer is experiencing massive backlash after infringing upon the work of another artist. However, this time, the claim is a bit more…tenuous. Diplo used the artwork of Rebecca Mock, a cartoonist, in a Snapchat video to promote himself and his material without permission. Understandably, Mock was irate, and made a request over Twitter to receive credit.
Now, here’s where it gets weird—Diplo subsequently provided credit to the creator of the .gif, as per her request. He claimed that due to the nature of Snapchat, he couldn’t credit her there, but would do so online. Apology made, corrective action, case closed, right? Apparently not. Mock and her followers continued to insult and deride the producer, and as much as we’d like to say that Diplo took the high road, he responded with this:
In this digital age, copyrights and intellectual properties are an extremely controversial subject. It’s difficult to know whether or not it’s legal to use an image or song commercially, and mistakes are going to happen. When they do, however, perhaps an apology and proper credit should be given, as opposed to responding with whatever the hell Diplo did.
