Want To Be A Producer? Just Get A Venture Capitalist

As of right now, our world is heading down a massive shift in how the music industry operates. Recently in an interview with GQ magazine, Diplo decided to throw his two cents in on where the industry is headed, and how you can do a much better job without a major label behind you. For a very long time, major labels held all of the power over the future of an artist. They held all the cards from producing the album to advertising for it’s release, to scheduling the tour, and creating the music videos. With the increasingly digital world, DIY (Do it yourself) music production is easier than ever. For just $100,000, you could get all of those things done and be famous, with the caveat that you might not actually be talented.

Diplo, who often has strong opinions, explains in the interview that a producer can easily manage their own career because major labels don’t actually know how to do any of the work that goes into it. Diplo says in the article “You know, you don’t need a label anymore. Major labels, they come to us anyway for, like, ideas for videos and marketing. We’re better at it than they are.” His suggestion to a young and budding producer is to seek out a venture capitalist to provide you with the cash flow to get your album out.

I think more artists, honestly, should find an investor. Like, an up-and-coming rapper, they should have angel investors. You need venture capitalists to invest in music. Because you don’t need as much money. You need like a hundred grand. You don’t need like two million.

What do you think? Could a producer get their music out pretty much all on their own? Tell us in the comments below.

Phillip was raised on so many different genres of music, it has given him a unique perspective into the ever evolving music scene. Trance music began defining his life at the young age of 14, but thoroughly enjoys any type of music equally. He sees the music as an escape from the daily doldrums of life and says music can change a persons life in an instant pulling from his own experiences. His only goal in life is to share wonderful music with people and take electronic music to a higher plain with more accountability and creating a safer environment for his friends.
