In a world where some of the biggest DJs are accused of being sellouts and completely at the mercy of their record label,s Steve Angello has said that enough is enough. After being fed up by disagreements about the release date for his new album, Wild Youth, and the lackluster support for his new track Wasted Love, Steve is buying himself out of his contract with Columbia Records. This sets an incredible precedent for the other big DJs in the game, especially if he ends up being successful without the backing of a huge label.
Like many producers, Angello has his own record label, SIZE, and has spent time over the last year plus developing it with artists to his liking. We won’t be surprised now that he’s through with Columbia to hear that he ends up taking his own label up a notch. Steve has always had a reputation of wanting to be in control of the creative process and by breaking from Columbia he’ll be able to do just that. We’ll be watching him a bit more closely as we’re sure others will, maybe 2015 will be a year of big change as other artists break the chains of the mega labels that hold them.
