You’ve dreamed of being an astronaut at least once in your life. We all have. It’s the Final Frontier. There isn’t much cooler (or nerdier) than rocketing a tin can through the Earth’s atmosphere at blinding speed to then float around Earth indefinitely. Well put on your horn-rimmed glasses and fire up Ableton Live, because NASA now has an official Soundcloud account. How many times have you caught yourself saying “Houston, we’ve had a problem?” Now you can hear the real thing.
NASA is capitalizing on the (possibly waning) popularity of Soundcloud, as well as their outrageous success on Instagram. The Soundcloud page itself describes their mission best: “Here’s a collection of NASA sounds from historic spaceflights and current missions. You can hear the roar of a space shuttle launch or Neil Armstrong’s ‘One small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind’ every time you get a phone call if you make our sounds your ringtone. Or, you can hear the memorable words ‘Houston, we’ve had a problem,’ every time you make an error on your computer.”

The best part for EDM producers here in the Northwest? Every single sound and sound byte on NASA’s Soundcloud is part of the public domain, which means you can use them almost however you want. Inject “We have a liftoff” right before a drop. Sample the beeps from Sputnik and turn them into an arpeggio monster lead. Use Saturn V rocket launches in place of white noise. The possibilities are endless.
