There are a lot of things that go into a successful event. From the venue and fans, to the artists and effects, each aspect plays an important role when putting on a show. When the Safe In Sound Festival announced they would be bringing their 150,000 watt PK Sound system to the Tri-Cities, many were intrigued and wondered just how the Mid-Columbia would handle such an event. Now that the ringing from the bass is finally gone and we can take a moment to reflect, there’s no doubt that the Tri-Cities stepped up and showed Safe In Sound a good time. The tour will now be heading to Seattle, with their PK Sound system ready, on October 25th at the WaMu Theater. This is the last Northwest stop on the tour, so don’t miss out!
Despite the recent boom of dance music and the rampant spread of shows and tours throughout the country, EDM fans in the Tri-Cities never dreamt of such a lineup gracing our area. The well-rounded, yet bass-centric batch of artists performing at the Toyota Center made the low-priced tickets a steal, even for a show taking place on a Wednesday night. The venue also did their part, doing an impressive job of taking on the first show of this kind in the Tri-Cities and learning from the mistakes of similar venues and events. There was a comfortable police/security presence, without it being overwhelming or intimidating. The lines throughout the concourse moved rapidly. Cheap ($2) water was available throughout the Toyota Center as well, and the outdoor smoking area was an added bonus. From a fan’s perspective, the venue did everything they could from both an entertainment and safety standpoint to make the event as fun as possible.
With the venue and fans doing their part, all that was left was the incredible assortment lineup of DJs to deliver. And good god did they deliver. Trio Terravita got things started in the best of ways, making sure everyone who was showing up went straight to the floor to rage. Making everyone forget their Wednesday worries, Terravita showed off their ability to intertwine a wide variety of genres while still showcasing their distinct style. Knowing all about distinct style, mysterious trap sensation ƱZ followed up with a set that showcased why everyone is clamoring for more REAL TRAP SHIT.
In a surprising set-times schedule, bass-fueled super-group Destroid took the stage around 9 p.m. and had everyone raising their fists shortly thereafter. Unlike anything the Tri-Cities has ever seen, trio Excision, Downlink, and KJ Sawka produced wave after wave of PK Sound perfection. Sawka’s awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping drum solo had everyone entranced until the bass blew the doors off, ensuring that the Toyota Center and greater Tri-Cities had most certainly been DESTROID.
Despite the destruction before him, it was Flux Pavilion who shined brightest at the Tri-Cities stop of Safe In Sound. Playing a ridiculously diverse set, he brought out everything bass fans love about bass music. Fitting in the originals that fans love while showcasing the incredible gamut of bass tunes available today, Flux Pavilion won over the Tri-Cities crowd just as he has at venues across the world. He’s been outspoken via social media recently on artist creativity, and if his performances on the Safe In Sound tour is any indicator, Flux is taking his personal creativity to another level.
The night ended with Northwest-favorite Adventure Club infusing their melodic style of dubstep into the fray at exactly the right moment. Following up the heavy, head-banging of Destroid and Flux, tunes like Wonder, Crash, and more from the duo were the perfect way to keep the energy high and offer up something different than the rest of the lineup.
