At the start of his first U.S. tour, Justin Putuhena, the 28 year old Dutch DJ/Producer better known Justin Prime, has a contagious high-energy sound filled with electro, Melbourne bounce, and hardstyle. We caught his show at the Fez Ballroom for their aptly titled #RageFriday, where there was an even mix of clubbers and ravers. “It was like an underground rave party from ten years ago. It was pretty awesome!” said Justin Prime of the Portland scene.
The whole night was filled with heavy-hitting beats. First up at 10pm Wolfkin took no mercy and went straight to the base. Officer Charles brought the full spectrum with dubstep, moombahton, house, and trap. By the time the headliner Justin Prime took the stage, the crowd was amped up and ready to #Rage.
Prime pays attention to the dynamics of the song and of the crowd. “I always look at the crowd and try to feel what the crowd wants,” he told us after we caught up with him briefly after the show. For Portland it was the hard stuff (which is what he normally plays), but for San Diego it was progressive house.
I tried to mix it up a bit with some commercial artists like Martin Garrix and Showtek, some underground, and some of my own stuff to keep everybody going.
Whether he plays more progressive or more hardstyle, be ready to dance, sweat, get doused in champagne, and have an awesome time. Justin Prime will be back again for another North America tour in November, so if you missed him this time around, you may have a chance to catch him this winter. For those of us who were lucky enough to catch him while he was in Portland and Seattle, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a sell-out venue for his next appearance.
