March 29th, Ultra Music Festival – Warm weather, downtown Miami, bright lights, thousands of people slammed together and one man at center stage, Joel Zimmerman, better known as Deadmau5. Let’s back track a moment. Friday evening Avicii had announced that he wouldn’t be making his set at the famous Avicii hotel Friday night and would be heading to a local hospital for gallbladder surgery (a few other artists were injured throughout the weekend). Avicii out of commission for a few days, some of us wondered who would take his spot Saturday night at UMF, but shortly after Ultra had announced that Deadmau5 would be taking his place.
Both Armin van Buuren and Above & Beyond had people in tears towards the end of the night with their beautiful ability to connect and control crowd emotion, but the mau5 had something else in mind. He began his set with some of his new tunes (his new album is supposedly dropping soon, but who the f*&! knows when that’ll happen) and about 30 minutes into his set he started mixing in Martin Garrix’s Animals followed by a hilarious surprise (watch below).

Moments later Tiesto took to Twitter with a rant (also look below)…
After Tiesto’s rant on Twitter the social media world almost burst into a war once again over Joel being Joel. Look at it this way, Ultra Music Festival had to find someone “bigger” to replace Avicii’s close out set on Saturday night (Deadmau5 did this back in 2011… it was awesome) so they probably called Joel and begged him (including an obscene amount of money in the process) to fill in. Let’s not forget the rant Joel went on a few years ago slamming the Miami festival and ‘EDM’, most of which has ended up turning out to be pretty true (EDM turning more commercial and UMF suckering their fan base for more money on this years ticket sales – $500 GA early bird). Deadmau5 clearly put on a show for those attendees who paid for over priced festival tickets.
He dropped Farm Animals which actually was first played out by Ookay (to our knowledge) and everyone thought it was hilarious. Followed by a mashup mixing Ghosts n’ Stuff & Levels, which actually turned out to be really awesome. In my strong opinion he just did something that thousands of other artists and DJs would love to do. At the end of the day he didn’t troll or do anything out of the ordinary for who he is and what he stands for. Let’s chill now.
