What if we told you that by simply waving your hand, you could make a variety of sounds and at a flick of a finger, you could make an entire melody? What if we told you it’s real? The future really is now – production will never be the same. Imogen Heap introduces a perfect example of why technology is a best friend to modern-day music. (Check out 7 futuristic gadgets that will change the way we listen to music here.)
After a quick look above, those gloves look like they’re straight out of the TRON costume designer’s office – and they very well could be. Imogen Heap has launched a campaign to raise $330,000 to produce a line of Mi.Mu gloves. (Shown above.)
(Fast forward to 13:30 for the super-cool performance.)
So, how does it work?
Each glove contains a range of sensors that are triggered by gestures. They track the wearer’s hand position, speed, and direction – and even the degree in which they bend their fingers. It can read movements like you can read the back of your hand. The information is sent wirelessly to a computer, allowing musicians to create music by moving their hands rather than by playing a keyboard or pressing buttons. Fingertips and palms remain free so the user can play instruments or interact with other devices. Can you say one-man band?
”I wanted to create something where I could manipulate my computer on the move wirelessly so that music becomes more like a dance rather than a robotic act like pressing a button or moving a fader.”
For all of you science fanatics and modern-day music fiends, this is maybe something you want to check out. Imagine conducting a whole song single handedly while incorporating some awesome dance moves with these babies. Help donate to Heap’s campaign and check out more about these musical mitts.
