Major Lazer Push Boundaries With “Apocalypse Soon” (Album Review)

[numblock num=”8″ style=”3″]With Apocalypse Soon, Major Lazer strike again to offer fans to step away from mainstream dance music and dig deeper into the sounds of the underground.[/numblock]

Major Lazer (now consisting of Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire) have been pushing boundaries for the past few years. With a completely chaotic live show and festival apperances all over the country, it’s clear they are an unstoppable force not to reckon with. And now they’re back with their highly anticipated E.P. Apocalypse Soon, released February 25th on Diplo’s own label, Mad Decent Records.

The first track, Aerosol Can, features one of the biggest collaborators yet, Pharrell, on vocals. Instead of singing in various octaves throughout the song, both Major Lazer and Pharrell stepped it down a notch on this one. Pharrell and sounds of an aerosol can start the song out before a tribal beat hit the listener’s eardrums. Pharrell’s vocals match the rhythm of the song perfectly while showing he still has plenty of flow to keep up with the upbeat tempo.

With an apperance by Sean Paul, Come On To Me puts Major Lazer back in their usual reggae-fused-to-moombahton state of mind. From the intro’s catchy trumpet sample, the song has an anthem feel to it. While it starts out slow, it isn’t long before Sean’s chanting takes over and blends perfectly with the music, moving the song in a new direction. This is sure to be included in Major Lazer set’s for years to come and really drive the crowd wild.

The third and final song of the E.P., Lose Yourself, finds the trio again turning in a new direction with the help of RDX and Moska. “Lose yourself, lose yourself, lose yourself” is heard repeating over and over soon after the song starts. The rasta chanting continues with samples of Express Yourself before going into a completely chaotic drop. It’s a moment that will leave any Major Lazer fan thirsty for more material.

Major Lazer’s prior release, Free the Universe, showed the act going for a more unified and crisp sound. “Apocalypse Soon” is instead a deep dive into the exploration of sounds and mysteries that await. Even the short three songs should hold fans over until the next highly anticipated album.
