It seemed like only recently we had word that Burial was releasing an EP. There was no information about a title, a track list; nothing. Now, it’s only been a week and the new Burial EP is available for streaming through YouTube. It’s titled Rival Dealer and its variety of available formats (vinyl, CD and digital download) will be released through HyperDub on December 16th. The EP feature’s three tracks: Rival Dealer, Hiders and Come Down to Us.
Burial Reaches Out On New EP
Sonically the Rival Dealer EP isn’t too different from other recent Burial releases. But the moments on this EP that really shine are the vocal breaks, expressing the EP’s wonderfully uplifting mantra of self-acceptance. They’re impossible to ignore. The instrumentals create a fantastic backdrop that accompanies the meaning and sound of his vocal samples. As an artist, Burial defies the notion of labels and expectations to just spit some real talk. It’s dang good. A fantastic, heartfelt release that feels genuine. It hits you right in your emotional core because it was designed to do so.
Burial goes deeper by talking about becoming at peace with sexual orientation. On the EP’s title track, Burial breaks the box of negative thought around sexual interest. The instrumentals start off sinister, scaring the listener with fierce drum and bass. There is also ambience mixed with sounds of destruction. In this world of rage, Burial offers a message about perspective. “This way you can see the city lights brighter than ever.” This vocal sample, accompanied with instrumentals, make you feel like you’re flying through the sky, away from the world you started in. This is more or less the feeling of the entire EP.
Attacking questions of identity on Come Down To Us, and attempting to show the importance of purpose behind every emotion, Burial tries to reveal you to yourself. At first listen Rival can seem to be the same mixture of Drum and Bass with electronic and organic ambience. When you really start to listen, the Rival Dealer EP makes it possible for anyone to become one with space and time, and most importantly themselves. A total awareness of being can be achieved through this EP. He’s forcing (or at least asking) the listener to believe in themselves not because they can, but because the beauty that’s inside of them is worth believing in.
