Tomorrow night the man everyone knows as the king of BBC Radio 1, bringing the “Essential Mix” straight to our earballs every week, will perform at Foundation Nightclub in Seattle. Worthy of checking off the musical bucket list as a MUST see, Pete Tong has not only helped rising artists grow and show their potential, but has given them the opportunity – through the “Essential Mix” – to create a 2-hour set that exactly represents them as artists, many times providing a platform to debut never-before-heard tracks or remixes.
If you haven’t yet heard an “Essential Mix,” take a look at DJ Mag’s Top 100 for a brief idea of the kind of talent coming to the table. You can hear music from artists like Above & Beyond all the way to Zed’s Dead performing an “Essential Mix,” which airs Friday nights on BBC Radio 1 between 1-3 AM GMT.
If you’re lucky enough to witness the opening of Pete Tong’s set, you might hear this familiar opening from most “Essential Mix” sets: “It was deep, it was soulful, it was techno, it was disco; a kaleidoscope of sounds, it was truly underground; it was an essential mix in the cloud, where we could dance and sing out loud, it was New York, Ibiza, and Miami, all wrapped up into one. Let’s do a mic check, make some noise!”
