DJ Mixxtress is a turntablist who can “scratch, beat match, and uses her decks like a conductor waves a baton.” She has performed at Seattle’s hottest nightclubs and venues in Vegas and the Philippines and is a resident DJ with Seattle’s Movin 92.5 radio station. Regular clients of DJ Mixxtress are the Seattle Seahawks, Nordstrom, and W Hotels, to name a few.
As the second runner-up in the 2014 DMC Championship, she has made a name for herself in the DJing community, and we got a chance to learn about how she got to where she is now, and her dreams for the future.
Tell us about yourself
DJ Mixxtress: I grew up with an uncle who was a DJ in the hip hop community back in the 90s, this is what initially sparked an interest in music for me. I had some friends who DJ’d growing up and they taught me the basics. I started taking DJing more seriously at the age of 25 and caught on quickly. In 2014, I placed 3rd in the DMC championships. This was an important moment in my career as it has set me apart and allowed my DJing career to take off.
How did you come up with the name DJ Mixtress?
DJ Mixxtress: I was booked for my first DJ gig and I didn’t have a name at the time, so my friend quickly made up a name for me and I have stuck with it ever since!
What are your current goals for yourself as a DJ?
DJ Mixxtress: I am always growing and learning as a DJ. I would love to perform more outside of Washington state. I am working on launching my own events business right now. The goal of the events business is to provide well-paid performing opportunities for DJs at corporate events. Eventually, I would like to teach DJ classes where I can support aspiring DJs in learning new skills.

What are some of your favorite performances/gigs that you have landed?
DJ Mixxtress: Two events come to mind. One of my favorite local events where I would spin was “Day Shift” at the Ciudad Grill. The vibe was hip hop and Motown while attendees enjoyed their drinks, food, and the sun. Another favorite event of mine was the “Black Market” in the Philippines. This event had a boiler room-type vibe. I played hip hop at this event. I do go to the Philippines often as I am half Phillipino.
What is your favorite genre of music to DJ right now?
DJ Mixxtress: I am currently really into house music! I enjoy the high energy that it brings.
What is your advice to aspiring DJs?
DJ Mixxtress: Practice! Do things that set you apart from other DJs. Learn various skills – scratching, juggling, be well-rounded!
Okay, this is a DJ-to-DJ question: Do you prepare sets or do you go with the flow?
DJ Mixxtress: I usually prepare a “crate” of music. At the event, I go with the flow with selections from that specific crate.
