Seattle’s nightlife scene has been uninterrupted by the pandemic since the summer, but with COVID-19 cases again on the rise, cancellations and closures are cropping up again.
This comes while the omicron variant has driven COVID cases up to record levels in the Seattle area, rising by almost 200% in King County over the holiday weekend. The county also had its highest ever single-day case count on Dec. 23 after identifying 2,200 cases. The previous high was just over 1,200 cases on November 30, 2020.
Insomniac Events announced this week that its Abduction New Year’s Eve event at WaMu Theatre in Seattle has been cancelled, citing concerns related to COVID-19.
Insomniac made the announcement on Tuesday, noting that “some of the artists and their crews are sick and unable to perform.” The lineup had originally included Eric Prydz, Lane 8, Dabin, Droeloe, Nostalgix, and Frida K.
Tickets for Abduction will be automatically refunded to the original method of purchase.
The second domino to fall came from Capitol Hill’s Q Nightclub, which cancelled its own New Year’s Eve Event on Wednesday, and was initially set to feature Shiba San headlining the night. The club made the decision “with the safety of our staff and guests in mind,” but did hint at a return to normal operations at the start of the new year.
