If your Pride celebrations fell a little flat this year, boy do we have a surprise for you. Trans queen SOPHIE just released 20 minutes of new music on YouTube. The live set originally intended for HEAV3N comes complete with laser art visuals and deliciously suggestive lyrics.
Sophie Long, aka SOPHIE, produces effervescent dream pop, UK dance, and weird a** experimental music. Even if you don’t recognize the name SOPHIE, you probably know her music. Producing for A-list artists (& queer icons) such as Madonna and Lady Gaga, she has been quietly shaping mainstream culture for years.
With successful singles trickling out on SoundCloud since circa 2013, SOPHIE finally released an album in 2017: OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES. In the wakes of this release, SOPHIE spoke openly about being trans.
The online event HEAV3N was scheduled for last week but ended up canceled. SOPHIE released her set of all original music on her YouTube channel instead. Raising money for Black trans and queer femmes, the set links out to the following organizations:
Black Trans Lives Matter Youth Fund
The Marsha P. Johnson Institute
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

Featuring experimental laser art by Pieterjan Ruysch, the set captured our undivided attention from start to finish. The soundscape slowly builds tension before cresting and falling into wobbly dance beats. SOPHIE’s music feels like a midnight ocean and Ryusch’s artwork glimmers like moonlight dancing on her waves.
