Whether you’ve been making new music, listening to new music and mixes, or enjoying the landslide of live-streams, the dance music community has been keeping busy during self-quarantine. Throughout the last few weeks, taking comfort in the music we love has been a well we’ve gone to time and time again. That’s why we’re so excited for Quarantined Beats.
A compilation album curated by Toastercookie, aka Angelo Carosio, Quarantined Beats will entirely be tunes created by Northwest artists during the statewide stay-home order quarantine. The full release will come in May. But, for now, we have a sneak peek in the form of the first release from the album: Dark Before the Light.
Dark Before the Light is a collaborative effort from Seattle’s Pressha (aka Matthew McGiveron) and AŞKIM (Herbert Henderson). It’s the first time the duo have worked together on a song, and we’re hoping for more in the future.
Usually a bass-focused artist, Pressha ventured into the realm of house music alongside AŞKIM for Dark Before the Light. Getting out of comfort zones during uncomfortable times is what making music is all about, and songs like Dark Before the Light show why that’s the case.
“When I first heard about the compilation I wanted to help aid in the relief from the virus, and also take on a new challenge of making a genre I had never tried before, as I am primarily known for bass music. AŞKIM and I had previously chatted about workin’ on a track together and this opportunity presented itself at the perfect time. I think we both have a lot of direction, where we want to go when we start working on music, and to meld both of our styles into one piece of music was both an exciting experience and a learning one. I have a deep love for house and breaks, and started out playing those before bass music. This track represents both of those in a very fun, quirky, funky jam we hope you enjoy.” – Pressha
Submissions are still open for consideration to be included on Quarantined Beats, and will remain so through the rest of April, coinciding with the statewide stay-home order. Interested Northwest artists can submit their songs here.
