oeksound Soothe2 review: Drastically improved dynamic control

We’ve been using oeksound Soothe extensively in our productions, finding exceptionally awesome use with it on vocals, drums and instrument groups. Soothe intelligently tames harshness and resonance in a smooth, unique and versatile manner. Soothe2 improves upon the solid foundation and in some ways, rebuilt it. Soothe2 now offers two modes- ‘soft’ and ‘hard’, as well as intelligent attack and release controls. The operating bandwidth of the plugin has also been drastically increased to cover the entire auditory spectrum down to 20 Hz. In addition to the improved dynamic processing control, Soothe now offers full mid/side processing which is extremely useful for stereo mic’d sources, mastering, and all things stereo!

Soothe2’s new suppression process modes react differently to the input material. ‘Soft’ is easier to use and introduces fewer artifacts while maintaining a natural sound. This mode reminds us of the sound of the original Soothe- controlled. The ‘hard’ mode is much livelier and is better suited for nastier harshness or a less transparent compressed sound. We got great use out of the ‘hard’ mode by blending our heavily processed signal with the unprocessed, thanks to the handy ‘mix’ feature.

For all you Soothe2 users we’re giving away a free preset! From de-essing a vocal taming digital harshness, this preset is an awesome starting point for tackling brightness.

The sidechain input feature allows the audio signal of one track to affect the reduction process of another with Soothe2 instantiated. This is an incredibly versatile function, allowing you to improve the clarity of vocals for instance, in contrast with their spatial processing effects. Soothe can dynamically reduce spatial effects while a vocal is playing, and as it cuts out, the spatial effects will ‘glue’ into the original sound, similar to the effect of a sidechain compressor but with extremely improved clarity and body.

Soothe has been hailed by numerous prestigious engineers worldwide, like Greg Wells (Katy Perry, Adele, Timbaland), Stefan (Dada Life), Ryan Hewitt (The Lumineers, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and more.

Soothe2 is available now on the oeksound website and costs 199 EUR, supporting both macOS and Windows using the VST, VST3, Audio Units and AAX plug-in formats. An upgrade license from Soothe to Soothe2 is also available for 50 EUR. A trial version is also available for those with an iLok account.
