Among the many digital music streaming services that are available, Beatport has always remained unique. Since their start in 2004 Beatport made a choice to stand out, focusing on music that came from DJs.
Waving off the influence of other genres, they chose to center solely on dance music, leading Beatport to become a favorite choice for DJs and independent labels. Now celebrating 16 years of music and achievements, the team behind Beatport has run through the numbers and memories to find some share-worthy highlights. One major highlight is that in 16 years Beatport has paid over $300M to independent dance labels.
Finding that impressive number comes from having over 259 million track downloads from their site. It’s no secret that in order for Beatport to be successful the independent labels they work with need to feel the love, too. It’s noted in their release that, “Beatport is proud to say that these payouts have consistently risen for the last three years.”
Implying that no other platform would payout as well as Beatport does, yet $300M in payout from 16 years of service doesn’t sound like a large enough number. Sharing company figures alongside the promise of increasing payouts is still a strong plan to generate new traffic for this expanding digital service.
Nonetheless, Beatport continues to grow, adding over 8,000 new independent labels and selling music for more than 74,000 labels in 2019 alone. As a digital service that is capable of making a profit through the waning phases of the download era, they know what it takes. Switching up the focus from downloads to streaming they released BeatportLINK in 2019. Increasing their number of active users it allows subscribers to stream any of the 9 million tracks available on the Beatport store directly to their DJ performance software.
Breaking down the past 16 years shows strong trends for Beatport that will hopefully continue into the future. The EDM world tends to show loyalty for companies who share the wealth, something that Beatport is leading the way in.
