For many of us, it’s hard to imagine a life without Spotify. Since the rapid rise of streaming services over the last decade, Spotify stands out as a cornerstone of modern culture. Now, the music streaming giant is finally getting its time in the spotlight.
Netflix recently announced that they will be releasing a scripted telling of Spotify’s origin story through a TV series. Following in the footsteps of movies like The Social Network, the new Spotify series will most likely be a dramatization as opposed to a docu-series. Unlike Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, however, Spotify’s founders will probably be painted in a better light.
The new Netflix series will be based on the 2019 book Spotify Untold written by journalists Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud. It tells the story of Spotify’s co-founders Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon. They rose against all odds and revolutionized the music industry during the height of multimedia piracy in the early 2000s.
It will be directed by Per-Olav Sørensen, director of the Netflix series Quicksand. A release date has yet to be announced, and it doesn’t have a title or prospective cast.
Berna Levin, the show’s producer, provided the following synopsis:
“It’s the story of how a small band of Swedish tech industry insiders transformed music — how we listen to it and how it’s made — is truly a tale for our time. Not only is this a story about the way all our lives have changed in the last decade, it’s about the battle for cultural and financial influence in a globalized, digitized world.”
