SoundCloud recently released some big news: that the 200 millionth track has been uploaded to the audio distribution platform. Just two years ago they announced that there were 125 million tracks available. What a leap!
Compared to its competitors, it’s especially impressive. Spotify has over 35 million songs, while Apple Music has over 45 million. A good portion of SoundCloud’s uploads contributing to the 200 million tracks are edits, mashups, remixes and DJ mixes, which make them stand out from the rest. Although this has been a major pro for SoundCloud over the years, it has also been a con, as copyright issues continually grow with questionable content submissions.
SoundCloud has partnered with rights clearance startup Dubset, integrated with DJ software like Serato, and opened up its self-monetization program to the public, now making it easier for creators to release content. While the 200 million tracks are an incredible feat, there is also some trending information showing that SoundCloud subscribers have been decreasing, while Spotify and Amazon Music traffic hold strong.
