DMNW: What makes a great event photo to capture the whole show in your opinion?
JW: “A vibe. An energy and a moment. I don’t think it needs to be the most technically/perfect photo or even the most focused photo. What is important is if it gives you an emotion when you look at it and you feel that moment.”
DMNW: Who are some of your favorite music artists?
JW: “I was listening to the Deaf Tones today. But as far as bass music goes, I’m a huge Bassnectar fan; I always have been. I love Noisia as well.”
DMNW: Any particular artists that would you like to work with in the future?
JW: “I would love to work with Bassnectar someday. I had the opportunity to work with Skrillex this year on a piece with my friend Jas Davis, who makes amazing work. He brought me in to help him edit a piece for Skrillex of all the stuff that he shot last year. Jas is an amazing shooter, so it was all unbelievable footage; he sent it to me, and together we edited this long piece that we called “The Same Place.” It was dope! That’s something that I was proud of and I would like to do that again.”
DMNW: If you had to choose, Coachella, EDC, Ultra or Burning Man?
JW: “Burning Man. I’ve been to all the other ones; I haven’t been to Burning Man so no question asked! But, I would also like to take this opportunity to shout out the best festival I’ve ever been to in this world. Shambhala. It’s amazing, unbelievable! Troy (Datsik) brought me there, saying to me ‘dude, get ready for this,’ and it was incredible.”
DMNW: So, what’s next for you?
JW: “The Datsik tour has been a wild ride, made some of my best friends ever. After this, I plan to keep on touring, but also try out some new things as well. I want to focus on doing some creative passion projects that I’m interested in doing for myself. I want to start directing more music videos this year, which I’ve been starting to do and I’ve done a few this year. One day, I would also love to work with a pop star, or big production shows in pop or for a rock band. Those are some of my 2017 goals!”
Make sure to check out more of James Winterhalter’s work on Vimeo, Instagram, and Twitter.
We’re certainly looking forward to seeing more of James’ production skills shine through in the future! Maybe we’ll catch him in the festival circuit again this year (Electric Forest? Shambhala?).
