5. Apply opposing EQ curves to sounds in the same frequency range
We’ve heard a thousand times “how does *insert favorite artist* get their bass and kick to sound so thick?” While there are many tricks used, a major core component is complimentary EQ. Sounds like a kick and a bass occupy the same part of the spectrum. In order to balance them properly, a space must be carved out for each.
To accomplish this, where you cut one, you can lightly boost the other. And vice versa. Doing so will ensure that each sound has its own space in your mix. As you balance your sounds, it’s important that you remember you aren’t changing sounds. You’re making room. How do you accomplish this with EQ? There are two important steps.
