M.I.A.
This one comes as no surprise. As Saturday night shifted from chill afternoon to hot summer night, MIA was the perfect way to get the party started. Jumping off with high-energy, dressed in metallic gold Hammer pants and a sparkling gold top and sneakers, MIA proved that you don’t have to dress skimpy to be sexy. Coordinating with her DJ behind her, MIA gave the crowd exactly what they wanted: An all-out wild and crazy dance party, equipped with her signature tribal/jungle beats and trap anthems, from both her older hits to new music from her fourth album Mantagi. We’ve never seen the pit so packed with people, and looking down from the top of the grassy hill was a spectacle of it’s own. Midway through her performance, MIA welcomed about 30 women on stage from the crowd to dance with her, solidifying the conclusion that women simply ruled Sasquatch this year. It’s rare in electronic music to rage out with a female on stage; the average percentage of female performers at electronic festivals is about 2%. Not only did Sasquatch raise that number to 20%, but the artists they chose, especially MIA, proved that women can go just as hard as the boys, and her set lit the chaos that lasted for the rest of the night.
