[divider]Slow Magic[/divider]
Slow Magic first and foremost is an artist who strives to avoid being pigeon-holed into any specific genre or sub-genre. He purposely avoids sharing personal details about himself such as his civilian name or where he is from, preferring to let the music he creates remain the focus of any attention aimed at him. He describes himself as “your imaginary friend” and the signature rainbow-colored tribal mask that he wears on stage continues that image. Deprived of the ability to see the facial expressions typically made by a DJ, members of the audience are instead forced to let what they are hearing guide their experience.
Slow Magic’s sound ranges from an upbeat yet calming melody on tracks like Girls to a more frenetic, Pretty Lights-esque energy on Youth Group. His remix of Bon Iver’s Hinnom,TX blends the usual haunting beauty of Bon Iver’s vocals with a synthy goodness reminiscent of Galantis’ You. Other tracks are mellow enough that they wouldn’t feel out of place in a vinyasa yoga class, though doing yoga at the show may prove challenging. Given the broad range that Slow Magic’s sounds cover it makes perfect sense why he prefers to stay behind the mask as a performer, as it’s hard to expect a certain sound from an artist whose face you don’t even know.
Slow Magic will be performing at 7:30 on Sunday, July 27th at 7:30pm on the Vera Stage.
