Balancing so many things, we had to know, was there one part of creating music she liked most?
Singing is very natural. I never thought I had a great voice. I was always humming and writing as a kid and we had lots of instruments. It wasn’t until I recorded my first song and heard my voice back on tape and actually had people start to tell me ‘you have such a nice voice’ that I was actually like “oh I do, you know. I have a good voice” so I wasn’t really pushing.
The insight behind how JES became a singer can be helpful in many ways to those who have ever felt defeated or not good enough. She didn’t necessarily think she had a good voice, but after some positive feedback, she was able to realize her talent, inspiring her to apply herself towards developing that. This work ethic translated into her inspired songwriting process.
I was always writing. Writing and singing comes together, it goes hand in hand for me. That’s pretty much the first thing. Second, is producing because it’s so important if you can create the pallet for your song before the big guy comes in and does stuff on it. Very few [songs] are just myself. I always try to put down the vibe and the pallet of sounds and things I like.
JES recognized the pallet of her work was a solid starting point and getting help from “the big guy” as well as others to collaborate was a great way to learn and grow, something we are all doing daily. To add to her learning, JES began DJing when she started her weekly Unleash The Beat radio show.
