[divider]3. THE STATE OF EDM[/divider]
Every DJ and producer nowadays has an opinion the massive growth of dance music worldwide, and rightly so. The people who headline our stages are the ones with the most at stake whenever there’s a tectonic shift, whether it’s trance’s movement to 138 bpm, or the spread of EDM globally. As veterans of the scene, Gabriel & Dresden aren’t ones to remain quiet on either of those topics.
While they admittedly are “not really feeling the WAO 138 scene personally,” they still openly acknowledge its significance within the greater scope of the scene they’re invested in.
The 138 movement is for the people who feel disenfranchised with the way trance has moved over to more of a broad electro house hybrid sound… we do respect it because is feels a lot more legit than where the popular sound has gone.
Of course, that “popular sound” has spawned a new generation of fans, many of which reach for the same kind of music that graces most festival mainstages on a regular basis. As producers that deal primarily in music that makes you feel, they astutely note that “a lot of the music that has gotten popularized by this movement feels very formulaic and not genuine feeling.”

Gabriel & Dresden’s creative hallmark is their willingness to experiment with a multitude of sounds and emotions, a stark contrast to the greater mainstream movement.
There are so many ways you can tweak a synthesizer we cannot understand why so many people choose essentially the same sounds for every one of their songs.
There are of course benefits to this growth in popularity as well, as the mainstream serves the express purpose of “getting people familiar with the sound of dance music.” This new generation gets in the door with music they hear on the radio, and then paves the way for “artists that are on the cutting edge and fringes of the scene, (giving them) the ability to also be a part of the movement because dance music is not a foreign sound to them as it was 10 years ago.” In the end, gifted artists like Gabriel & Dresden always seem to end up standing above the rest.
