[divider]2. A PEEK INSIDE THE STUDIO[/divider]
The process for most collaborations in dance music is simple. Usually two artists get in the studio together, there’s a fair amount of back and forth, both producers spend some time alone with the track, then it comes together into one, beautiful result. With Gabriel & Dresden, their method is far more nuanced (and something not often seen in the collaborative process).
Part of their resurgence together comes from a healthy separation, as they now live in different cities while still managing to tour and produce together. That separation in turn has led to them “recently stumbl(ing) on a really cool system for our writing sessions.”
We will create a bunch of MIDI tracks and then plug them into an analog synthesizer and just record ourselves playing around with knobs recording everything. When we are done, we go back and find the best parts and start creating the track. This way we get to maximize our time together and making music becomes way more fun and interactive.
This interactive style of music-making is rarely seen with multiple producers, but in the end this byproduct of their time apart has made for some intriguing insight into a unique studio process.
