Discwoman leads charge for women in dance music
All-female dance-music collective Discwoman is playing their part in New York City’s new nightlife laws, while doing everything they can to push female artists in every way imaginable. Huh.
Last week, we discussed the new governmental nightlife offices being created in New York City. Change like that doesn’t just happen, and thanks to groups like Discwoman, the dance music culture and scene around the globe is improving. They were highlighted last week in Rolling Stone, detailing their impressive contributions to dance music since their creation in the summer of 2014.
Hosting their first festival in September of that same year, they’ve since expanded, featuring shows in places like Berlin and Mexico City. Oh, and they now manage nine artists, while donating to charity on a regular basis. Their focus on women is refreshing, and blatantly necessary in today’s dance music industry.
“We feel encouraged to take that stand when bigger institutions will stand by us in these efforts. It’s nice when local promoters or label managers want to make changes and be more proactive booking, working with, promoting women… Even better is when very male-dominated spaces start to become more inclusive without drawing any attention to themselves making that decision.” – Emma Burgess-Olson, founding member of Discwoman, via Rolling Stone
The dance music scene could use more groups like Discwoman, and we’re excited for what they have in store for the future. Even better, publications like Rolling Stone are giving them shine, at a time where EDM isn’t where it was even just a couple of years ago. Thanks to Discwoman, and those like them, dance music is going to be just fine.
One of our favorite artists is giving us another reason to love her work, as REZZ is releasing a comic-book to go with her debut studio album. Hopefully she can make some money with her awesome idea, but it will pale in comparison to the wads of cash being thrown at streaming giant Spotify. Thankfully, for every multi-billion dollar business in the industry, there’s a group like Discwoman, doing the work that needs to be done in the dance music scene.
