EDM is making waves in the most populated country on Earth

While EDM in America may not be as popular as it was just a few years ago, China is becoming dance music’s next global hot-spot. Huh.

The first Storm Festival in Shanghai took place in November of 2013, featuring several of the biggest names in EDM. The two-day festival marked the initial run of mainstream and commercialized EDM festivals making their way to the most populated country on the planet. Now, as festivals in America and around the world continue to downsize or disappear completely, Storm Festival’s parent company A2Live is expanding.

Putting on five festivals in China over the last several weeks alone, shows outside of the mainland are on the way for Taipei and Sydney.

“China reminds me of when EDM exploded in America; I really feel that it’s taken off. Everyone seems to get it and everyone seems to be pushing it there… The enthusiasm for DJs and this kind of music, the type of new feel, is really something else. In Europe, it’s been going on for so long it almost feels like we’ve seen it all and done it all, whereas in China it’s really something new.” – Laidback Luke via South China Morning Post

It will be interesting to see how companies like A2Live do when other global players make their way into the Chinese market. Everyone will want a slice, especially with other markets seemingly drying up. Ultra Music Festival has already moved-in, hosting their first festival in China earlier this month. All in all, more dance music around the world can’t be a bad thing, and we’re excited to see how the genre grows in a new, exciting locale.

There will be a Night Mayor of New York in the future, working toward supporting the nightlife industry in one of the most historic scenes in dance music. If you really want to get into the history of dance music, the questions for a German-based 1996 Techno Quiz have found their way to the internet, while EDM is making its way to mainstream Chinese popularity.
