What would a modern-day Halloween shindig be without some witch house on your playlist? Salem may be seen by some as an awful novelty that should be left in the forgotten catacombs of 2010 indiesphere buzz-bands where they belong, but it’s hard to deny that many tracks off of their only album King Night work very well in any sort of cheesy spooky and/or Halloween playlist. Shoegaze-y, Halloween soundtrack CD-esque synthesizers are backed up with electronic percussion and ethereal vocals.
Although some of the gimmicky, dated pitch-shifted hip-hop crossover tracks on here may have some attendees scrambling for the door, King Night will do wonders in setting a cheesy horror vibe for your Halloween party.
Released earlier this year, Dumb Flesh is the latest solo endeavor by Benjamin John Power, one half of experimental electronic duo Fuck Buttons, released under his Blanck Mass project. Though the LP is very diverse stylistically, throughout the LP it maintains a cold, psychedelic, and dark tone that, at times, sounds horror movie-ready.
If you want a strange and profoundly unfriendly set of tracks to put on your soundtrack, Dumb Flesh is definitely a must.
What else would you expect from a record label called Ghostly? Ghostly Swim 2 is a compilation of tracks from various artists in Ghostly’s roster, which you can download for free from Adult Swim’s website. While the label fronts a wide array of artists in the world of underground music, the majority of tracks on this album sit more on the murky, moody beat-driven side of things.
Popular faces like Shigeto and Dauwd show up on this record, as well as some lesser-knowns in the Ghostly catalog, like Pascäal, Heathered Pearls, and the criminally overlooked Babe Rainbow. The album serves as perfect brooding mood music, and you may end up being turned on to some of your new favorite producers in the process.
