Reactions From Around EDM At “We Are Your Friends”

It was bound to happen at some point. Someone, somewhere was thinking “Hey, this EDM stuff is pretty lucrative. We should make a shitty movie about it.” Well from the looks of the latest trailer for “We Are Your Friends” starring Zac Efron, they’ve succeeded. The reaction to the trailer has been pretty sweeping throughout the dance music community and it’s pretty hilarious. If you go to any electronic artists social page, you will find some amazing quotes. We have gathered a few of the most hilarious ones for you to enjoy, but first lets talk about the movie and its implications.

The plot of the movie is very simple. The story follows a young aspiring DJ, Cole Carter (Zac Efron), as he tries to make it in the dance music scene in Hollywood. Eventually he makes acquaintance of a veteran DJ in the scene, DJ James (Wes Bentley), who takes Cole under his wing and begins to mentor him. A their friendship begins to blossom, Cole finds himself falling for James’ girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski). Needless to say, this will cause Cole to have to make some serious decisions about his future as his friendship with James begins to fall apart. Watch the trailer below.

Here is what many DJs have posted after watching the trailer for “We Are Your Friends”.

First we have Bassnectars incredibly sarcastic response.

Then there is Ooah, of the Glitch Mob, with the most saddening tweet of all. Please don’t go, Ooah. We need you now more than ever!

The Chainsmokers make a pretty solid prediction about the movie with their Tweet.

Kill The Noise really hit the nail on the head with this tweet.

So with that last Tweet from Kill The Noise, we must agree with him. The themes in the movie are just so far removed from the reality of the electronic music industry, that we watched this trailer with our jaws on the floor. Is this what people think when they think of electronic music? “If you’re a DJ, all you need is a laptop, some talent, and one track” is the tag line of the movie. That might be the most asinine thing we have ever heard. It’s very similar to “they just press play.” The truth of the matter is that truly talented DJs need a lot more than that. You need a lot of skill as a DJ, you need to be a talented musician to compose music, and you certainly need a lot more than one track.

Sad to say, we will probably go and see this movie. We kind of have to. But we can say, with confidence that this will be a horrible movie. What are your thoughts on the “We Are Your Friends” trailer? Tell us in the comments below.

Phillip was raised on so many different genres of music, it has given him a unique perspective into the ever evolving music scene. Trance music began defining his life at the young age of 14, but thoroughly enjoys any type of music equally. He sees the music as an escape from the daily doldrums of life and says music can change a persons life in an instant pulling from his own experiences. His only goal in life is to share wonderful music with people and take electronic music to a higher plain with more accountability and creating a safer environment for his friends.
