Reddit Top 100 DJs Gets Closer to the Truth

Shadow DJ

It’s no secret in the dance music community that the DJ Mag Top 100 has become as meaningless as someone’s home phone number. Recently Flux Pavilion made a plea for wiser voting and even Dannic, the #26 DJ said it’s “not about DJing anymore, it’s a popularity poll.” We at DMNW have been wondering if it would be possible for another poll to take shape that would actually hold its weight.

Thanks to the /r/electronicmusic crew at Reddit, you could say that it has. Originally in the /r/electronicmusic subreddit and spread among some of the sub-genre Reddits, all communities were able to participate in the voting. Resolution headliner Eric Prydz takes home the prize of Reddit’s Top 100 DJs, though the amount of prestige that comes with that has yet to be seen. Check out the results and let us know what you think!

In the end there were 2600 votes, and we think most would agree that this a more accurate reflection of talent among electronic artists. Participants could vote for their top 3 favorite DJs which gave those assembling the list 1100 DJs to sort through. Apparently about 700 of those 1100 only received 1 to 3 votes. If you’re curious about the nitty gritty details, you can check out the full list of DJs with vote counts here.

It may not be perfect, but this sure seems a lot closer to accurate than the DJ Mag Top 100. There’s definitely some notable exceptions like Gareth Emery, and some pleasantly surprising additions like Darude. What do you think? Hit or miss?
