Should Music Venues Get Public Funding?

Once again trumping the American dance music standard, British Culture Minister, Ed Vaizey, recently reiterated the importance of supporting music venues within the UK. Currently, music venues have the option to apply for funding from the government, utilizing the same funding used for art or cultural events.

“A vibrant music venue which is breaking new acts has just as much right to be considered a cultural venue as a local or regional theatre.”

England has a long and rich history in the depths of dance music, creating ripples of influence that have been crossing the Atlantic pond for decades. While small venues within the UK have been suffering recently due to rising rents, licensing restrictions, noise complaints, and competition, the government shows a solid stance in supporting all forms of art, including music venues.

While only a few music venues currently take advantage of this additional funding, some music venues are broadening their brand outside the classic live music act. Further continuing the blend of artistic expression, music venues have begun to house illustrators, jewelry makers, and other types of artists. As art forms continue to blend into one another, one can hope that small venues can stay afloat as they transition into more than just a live music venue.

London is already leading the way in nightlife reform, with their “Night Mayor” proposal well underway. Do you think music venues in the United States should follow their example and receive public funding? Is there a demand in Seattle for venues to do more than just provide amazing music acts? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
